The Swan Inn

c1732 – c1809

14 Church Street.

Deeds at Shropshire Archives, from 1756, recite a 1732 document which refers to: “also the Swan Inn, in the occupation of Jeremiah Brown the elder”. In 1768, Robert Clive bought the Waring’s Estate, which included The Swan Inn, “ in the occupation of Jeremiah Brown the elder, then John Price, then Thomas Harding”.

It occurs in the 1809 Pew sitters plan of the church which nominated “South Aisle 2 Earl of Powis for Swan Inn and Arch Deacon Corbett”

But by 1848 a map of “sundry messuages divided into lots for sale” shows the Old Swan on the corner of an entrance in lower Church Street. As in other cases, this may indicate that the pub had closed. Now a private residence.

Research ongoing. Do you have any information or pictures of any of the pubs of Bishop’s Castle? We’d love to hear from you. Contact us here.
